The smart road tested by China is paved with solar panels, mapping sensors and electric battery chargers. The technologies are incorporated under the transparent concrete used to build a 1,080 meter stretch in Jinan city.
About 45 thousand vehicles pass through the stretch every day. With this figure, according to construction company Qilu Transportation Development Group, solar panels are capable of generating enough electricity to power the road lights and 800 homes.
However, Qilu Transportation wants to do more than supply power: whether the road is as smart as the vehicles of the future. According to the government, 10% of all cars should be fully autonomous by 2030, and Qilu sees this forecast as an opportunity to provide better traffic updates, more accurate mapping and even recharging of electric vehicle batteries.
